Brian Atwood
Co-founder, Versant Ventures

Brian co-founded Versant Ventures after spending four years at Brentwood Venture Capital, where as a general partner he led investments in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and bioinformatics. He also has more than 15 years of operating experience in the biotechnology industry, with emphasis on therapeutic products, devices, diagnostics, and research instrumentation. Previously, Brian was founder, president, and CEO of Glycomed, a publicly traded biotechnology company. Prior to this, he co-founded and served as director of Perkin Elmer/Cetus Instruments, a joint venture for robotics automation and genomics research instruments and products later acquired by Perkin Elmer. Under Brian's management, the venture developed and launched the GeneAmp® Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) system, the fundamental DNA amplification innovation responsible for fueling the explosive growth of genomics research. Brian currently serves as a Board member at Pharmion, a public company, as well as the private companies Saegis Pharmaceuticals, Salmedix, FivePrime and Xenogen. Brian received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine; a master's degree from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Tim Harkness
Founder, Crucible Scientific

Tim Harkness is the Founder of Crucible Scientific.  Formerly the Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Nektar. Prior to joining Nektar, Mr. Harkness served as Chief Financial Officer of Molecular Devices Corporation, an international life sciences tools company, from 1998 through April 2007, when the Company was acquired by Toronto-based MDS, Inc. While at Molecular Devices, he also had responsibility for worldwide manufacturing and corporate development as the Senior Vice President of Operations from 2005 to 2007. Prior to 1998, Mr. Harkness was Vice President of Business Development at Vivra Specialty Partners, a physician practice management company. From 1994 to 1997 Mr. Harkness worked in the health care investment banking practice at Montgomery Securities, and from 1989 to 1992 he was with Arthur Andersen & Co. Mr. Harkness holds an M.B.A. from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and is a CPA.

Yue-Teh Jang, Ph.D.
Partner, The Vertical Group

Yue-Teh is a general partner of The Vertical Group and has more than 20 years of experience in various executive positions in the health care industry. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Embol-X, a private company engaged in the development of proprietary medical devices to prevent stroke during cardiac surgery and other interventional procedures. Prior to that time, Dr. Jang was a vice-president for corporate R&D at Boston Scientific, vice-president for R&D at Cardiovascular Imaging Systems, a project manager with Mallinckrodt Medical, and a scientist with Deseret Medical. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Bacchus Vascular Inc., Dynamic Implants, Ensure Medical, Inphenix Corp.and Orbital Fixation. Dr. Jang received a B.S. in Materials Science from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Utah.

Joe Keegan, Ph.D.
President and CEO of ForteBio

Dr. Keegan has more than 25 years of experience managing life science tools businesses. During his 9-year tenure at MDC, Dr. Keegan grew the company’s revenues from $30 million to $190 million through internal growth and acquisitions. In early 2007, he oversaw its acquisition by MDS for $615 million. Dr. Keegan joined MDC from Becton Dickinson and Company where he served as president of Worldwide Tissue Culture and vice president, general manager of Worldwide Flow Cytometry. Prior to Becton Dickinson, Dr. Keegan was vice president of the Microscopy and Scientific Instruments Division of Leica, Inc. He currently serves on the board of directors of Alpha Innotech Corporation, BioImagene, Inc. and Seahorse Bioscience Inc. Dr. Keegan holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Stanford University.

Deborah Neff
CEO and President of Pathworks Diagnostics, Inc.

Deb is the CEO and President of Pathwork Diagnostics (formerly Predicant Bioscience, Inc.), which develops and commercializes molecular diagnostic tests for cancer that are designed to provide pathologists and oncologists with high-value information that can help transform patient care. Most recently, she served as Worldwide President of BD Biosciences, a billion-dollar business segment within Becton Dickinson. Previously Deb held various executive positions within Becton Dickinson, as well as at Organon-Tecknicka and Cooper Biomedical. She has a BS degree in physiology and a certificate of graduate study in medical technology and immunohematology from the University of California, Davis.

Hong Tan, Ph.D.
Founder, CTO, and President, China Operations

Hong has extensive industrial experience in management and in the development of high tech products including space telescopes, computer disk drives, fiber optic components and biochemical sensors. Prior to founding FortéBio Biosystems, Hong was the founder, President and CEO of Wave Crossing Corporation, a fiber optic component startup. He was also a key contributor to the creation of several computer products, including the Iomega removable disk drive. His prior experience includes engineering management and product development with Iomega, Maxtor, and NASA. He holds a Ph.D. and an MSEE from Auburn University and a BSEE from Xi'an Jiao Tong University in China.

Craig Taylor
Partner, Alloy Ventures

Craig is a partner at Alloy Ventures and has been a venture capitalist since he joined Asset Management Company in 1977. He is a director of two public companies, Pharmacyclics and Lynx Pharmaceuticals. Craig also serves on the boards of a number of private companies, including Adeza, Galileo Pharmaceuticals, K2 Optronics, Picoliter, and Zyomyx. Craig serves on the Board of Advisors of the MIT/Stanford Venture Laboratory and the Stanford Office of Technology Licensing GAP Fund and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Venture Capital Association. Prior to becoming a venture capitalist, Craig worked in the Office of Technology Licensing at Stanford. He earned a BS and an MS in physics from Brown University and an MBA from Stanford University.

James Woody, M.D., Ph.D.
Partner, Latterell Venture Partners

Jim is a venture capital partner at Latterell Venture Partners. He was formerly President of Roche Bioscience in Palo Alto, California. Previously, Jim served as Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of R&D for Centocor, where he was responsible for antibody and peptide-based therapeutics. As Commanding Officer and Director, US Naval Medical Research and Development Command, he was responsible for medical research and development activities ranging from transplantation research to infectious diseases. Jim received his MD from Loma Linda University, trained in Pediatric Immunology at Duke University and Children's Hospital in Boston (Harvard), and holds a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of London, England. He has authored or co-authored more than 140 publications.
