Joe Keegan

Joseph D. Keegan, Ph.D.
President and CEO

Dr. Keegan has more than 25 years of experience managing life science tools businesses. During his 9-year tenure at MDC, Dr. Keegan grew the company’s revenues from $30 million to $190 million through internal growth and acquisitions. In early 2007, he oversaw its acquisition by MDS for $615 million. Dr. Keegan joined MDC from Becton Dickinson and Company where he served as president of Worldwide Tissue Culture and vice president, general manager of Worldwide Flow Cytometry. Prior to Becton Dickinson, Dr. Keegan was vice president of the Microscopy and Scientific Instruments Division of Leica, Inc. He currently serves on the board of directors of Alpha Innotech Corporation, BioImagene, Inc. and Seahorse Bioscience Inc. Dr. Keegan holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Stanford University.

Hong Tan

Hong Tan, Ph.D.
Founder, CTO, and President, China Operations

Hong has extensive industrial experience in management and in the development of high tech products including space telescopes, computer disk drives, fiber optic components and biochemical sensors. Prior to founding FortéBio Biosystems, Hong was the founder, President and CEO of Wave Crossing Corporation, a fiber optic component startup. He was also a key contributor to the creation of several computer products, including the Iomega removable disk drive. His prior experience includes engineering management and product development with Iomega, Maxtor, and NASA. He holds a Ph.D. and an MSEE from Auburn University and a BSEE from Xi'an Jiao Tong University in China.

Jack Fuchs

Jack H. Fuchs
Vice President of Strategy

Jack brings a wide range of business and entrepreneurial skills to ForteBio including a deep understanding of marketing and sales, business development, finance and corporate strategy. As an entrepreneur, he has held Vice President, Marketing, Business Development, and Sales positions at a number of private companies, including IPWireless, a 120-person broadband wireless company that was successfully sold to a strategic buyer in 2007. Previously, Jack held several senior positions with increasing responsibility at Becton Dickinson & Company including Vice President, e-Business; North American Business Leader and Vice President Worldwide Marketing, Injection Systems; and Director of Corporate Planning. Earlier in his career, Jack was an Engagement Manager with McKinsey & Company, where his client focus was the healthcare industry, including technology strategy for pharmaceutical businesses and operational strategy for medical device businesses. He has an AB in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College and received his MBA from Stanford University.

Janette Phi-Wilson

Janette Phi-Wilson
Vice President of Marketing

Janette has more than 18 years of research and business experience in life sciences instrumentation and reagent companies. She joined ForteBio in January 2004 as Director of Market Development and has been instrumental in the successful launch of the company’s first products. Previously, Janette held management positions at both large and small companies; among them are Becton-Dickinson Biosciences (BD), AmCell, Quantum Dot and Guava Technologies. She was involved in raising over $54M in early-stage funding at three start-up companies including Guava, where she was the first employee. Janette’s technical experience encompasses assay development, systems integration and development, as well as strategic planning. She also holds expertise in the areas of medical device and Flow Cytometry and is inventor and or co-inventor of more than six U.S. patents. Janette received her BS in Immunology at UC Berkeley and her MBA from Santa Clara University.

Terry Salyer

Terry L. Salyer
Vice President of Sales

Terry’s experience in the life sciences industry encompasses domestic sales, finance and marketing in addition to her leadership role in international sales.  She joined ForteBio from Eksigent Technologies, where as Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Service Terry developed a global sales organization and commercial structure for this capital equipment company. Prior to that, as Director of Sales at Molecular Devices, Terry was responsible for the company’s Life Sciences, Cellular Neuroscience, and Threshold Divisions.  During her ten years at Molecular Devices, Terry was also Western Regional Manager of the Life Sciences Division. She holds a BS in Biotechnology from Minnesota State University at Mankato.

Bernelle Saperstein

Bernelle H. Saperstein
Vice President, Manufacturing Operations

Bernelle is an extremely knowledgeable operations executive with manufacturing and materials experience in diagnostics, chemical and pharmaceutical production. Her broad-based expertise encompasses planning, inventory and expense control, productivity improvement, quality system implementation and maintenance, regulatory compliance, site management, HR/labor relations, and plant start-ups and shut downs. Bernelle joined ForteBio in July 2006 from BD–Immunocytometry Systems, where she led a large team responsible for manufacturing and testing reagents for cell analysis. Previously, she held executive positions at First Medical, a subsidiary of Sigma Diagnostics, and Roche Diagnostics. Bernelle began her career at Merck, where for nearly 20 years she worked first at Merck Research Laboratories and later at the company’s Calgon Corporation subsidiary. She received a BS in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech.

Robert Wicke

Robert Wicke
Vice President of Engineering

Robert joined ForteBio in December 2007 from Molecular Devices Corporation, where he was most recently Vice President of Product Development. Previously, he held various positions, including Vice President of Engineering, during his 10 years at Axon Instruments, Inc. In addition, Robert was a founding member of Anyware Fast, Inc., where he helped create the original Java platform and the XIL imaging suite for Sun Microsystems. He has more than a decade of software engineering, product development and executive business management experience in instrumentation companies; and he has published a number of software applications that have been commercialized. Robert received an MS in Computer and Information Sciences, specializing in 3D mathematical visualization techniques from the University of Oregon and both a BA in Computer and Information Sciences and a BA in Mathematics from Drew University.

Robert Zuk

Robert Zuk
Vice President of Development

Bob has broad industrial experience in the development of novel medical and diagnostic devices. His management and technical expertise encompasses the integration of biochemistry with device design for optimal performance in biological applications. Bob was most recently Vice President of Bio-Development at Pharmasonics (1998–2003), where he was involved in development of ultrasound devices to enhance delivery of non-viral vectors for gene therapy. He has held senior management positions in several companies including First Medical Inc. (1994–1998), Metra Biosystems (1991–1994), Molecular Devices (1985–1990) and Syntex (1976–1985). Bob led the development of a number of commercial products including Alpha Dx (First Medical), Metra Pyd (Metra), Threshold (Molecular Devices) and AccuLevel (Syntex). In addition, Bob is co-inventor of more than 35 U.S. patents. He received a BS from the University of California, Riverside.
